Halloween Safety Tips from the Rocky River Fire Department
Richard Bycoskie
As we approach Halloween evening, we’d like to remind everyone about the importance of fire safety, especially concerning fire pits and recreational fires. With windy conditions expected this evening, it is crucial to take extra precautions to ensure a safe celebration.
Fire Safety Tips:
1. Local Ordinances
Fire pits are required to be at least 15 feet from any structure. This includes garages, sheds, decks, fences, etc. If the smoke created by a fire becomes a nuisance, it will be required to be extinguished.
2. Wind Conditions
For windy nights, consider postponing any outdoor fires. High winds can easily spread flames and embers, creating hazards.
3. Set Up Away from Structures
If you decide to use a fire pit, place it at least 15 feet away from homes, fences, or any combustible objects.
4. Supervise at All Times
Never leave a fire unattended. Keep a close watch on children and pets around your fire.
5. Have Safety Gear Ready
Keep a bucket of water, a garden hose, fire extinguisher nearby to quickly extinguish any flames when necessary.
6. Extinguish Properly
When finished, ensure all embers are completely out. Douse all embers with water and stir the ashes to confirm it is extinguished.
Let’s work together to keep our community safe while enjoying the evening. Have a fun and spooky Halloween!
Stay Safe!
