History
The fire department began as a volunteer department in 1911. In 1924, the first fulltime members, a lieutenant and one firefighter were appointed. A year later, the lieutenant was appointed chief of the department and two additional firefighters were added. That same year, 1925, the fire department purchased an American La France type 75 combination chemical engine with junior pump. This pumper was rebuilt by former Eaton Township Fire Chief Mel Ternes and is currently housed at the Rocky River Service Garage. Today, the Fire Division consists of 29 fulltime personal including a Chief, Fire Prevention Officer, three Captains, six Lieutenants, and eighteen firefighters. All members of the Fire Division are also certified Paramedics. The Fire Division services also include: Fire Prevention, Dive Team/Water Rescue, Hazardous Materials/Technical Rescue Team and Fire Investigation Unit.
